DEPRESSION
What is Depression?
While we all feel sad, moody or low from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for long periods of time (weeks, months or even years) and sometimes without any apparent reason. Depression is more than just a low mood – it's a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.
Major depression is sometimes called major depressive disorder, clinical depression, unipolar depression or simply 'depression'. It involves low mood and/or loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities, as well as other symptoms.
The symptoms are experienced most days and last for at least two weeks. Symptoms of depression interfere with all areas of a person's life, including work and social relationships.
Depression can be described as mild, moderate or severe; melancholic or psychotic.
Remember, depression is treatable and effective treatments are available. The earlier you seek support, the better.
Causes of Depression
While we don’t know exactly what causes depression, a number of things are often linked to its development. Depression usually results from a combination of recent events and other longer-term or personal factors, rather than one immediate issue or event.
Causes may include:
Life events and severe stressors
Personal factors including family history, personality, serious medical illness, drug and alcohol use or abuse
Changes in the brain including genetic vulnerability
Types of Depression
There are different types of depressive disorders. Symptoms can range from relatively minor (but still disabling) through to very severe, so it's helpful to be aware of the range of conditions and their specific symptoms.
Types include:
Major depression
Melancholia
Psychotic depression
Antenatal and postnatal depression
Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression)
Cyclothymic disorder
Dysthymic disorder
Seasonal affective disorder
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
It’s important to remember that we all experience some of these symptoms from time to time, and it may not necessarily mean you're depressed. Equally, not everyone who is experiencing depression will have all of these symptoms.
You may be depressed if, for more than two weeks, you've felt sad, down or miserable most of the time, or have lost interest or pleasure in usual activities, and have also experienced several of the signs and symptoms across at least three of the categories below.

Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
Underlying most depression is a sense of disempowerment leading to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
These feelings can cause a 'flat affect' where nothing is able to raise the sense of hope or joy in the depressive person.
Ruminating on the lack of motivation and achievement further spirals the individual into a deeper state of depression, whereby negative self-talk can take over, and overwhelm grows to the point of complete inability to start or finish anything. It is a cycle feeding itself and needs to be treated with great understanding and empathy.
Depressive blocks in mind, body, spirit
Depression creates blocked areas in your energy body. This prevents the flow of healthy, vital energy which gives us a sense of inner peace, health and vitality. Not only clearing the blocks held within the mind and physical body (such as pain from injury or physical abuse), you must also clear the blocks backing up the flow in your energy body. The energy body is a real thing... it's now been acknowledged in the scientific world and can be seen using an MRI scan. Trapped energy, blocks, etc, is another important aspect of recovery which must be addressed in order to fully heal and recover from PTSD.
